Congratulations to alumni Ben Glassberg and Florian Störtz!

Cambridge alumnus Ben Glassberg has been appointed as Music Director of the Volksoper Wien, taking up the position from January 2024.

During his time at the University of Cambridge, Ben was the 2013 – 2014 Cambridge University Musical Society Conducting Scholar, and after completing his Music degree he studied conducting with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music. Ben has since worked extensively in operatic and symphonic repertoire, in some of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses and concert halls. Most recently, Ben has held the position of Music Director of the Opéra de Rouen Normandie.

It was a pleasure to welcome Ben back to conduct the Cambridge University Orchestra in the opening concert of the 2022 – 2023 season, Serenade to Music, with piano soloist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason.

Florian Störtz has been awarded first prize and the audience prize at the Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition, also in Vienna. This prestigious international competition gives talented young performers a jump-start in their careers.  Florian was a member of the Sir Arthur Bliss Lieder Scheme at the University of Cambridge while completing his MPhil in Physics.
