ADAMS Hallelujah Junction
POULENC Sonata for Two Pianos with additional improvisation

SOHAN KALIRAI piano
MANAV PAUL piano

Join us for the second instalment of the Cambridge University Lunchtime Concert series, showcasing a dynamic student piano duo. Sohan Kalirai and Manav Paul unite to present a programme featuring masterful compositions by Adams and Poulenc. Notably, American composer John Adams’ Hallelujah Junction draws its name from a truck stop near the California-Nevada border. To illustrate the ‘junction’ the piece bounces highly rhythmic motifs back and forth between the two pianos. In a delightful contrast, Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Two Pianos echoes shades of Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Ravel. As a result, the piece paints a romantic, but equally stark picture. Similarly to the Adams, the interplay between the two pianists weaves a captivating narrative.

The Cambridge University Lunchtime Concert series offers a vibrant stage for students and local performers. Open to the public every Tuesday during the University of Cambridge term, these complimentary concerts are well attended. CULCs are curated by a student committee and supported by the Centre for Music Performance.

Free admission with retiring donations gratefully received.
