Join us for an insightful pre-concert talk by Professor Bettina Varwig, a distinguished scholar in music and cultural history at the Faculty of Music. With a wealth of expertise in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his time, Professor Varwig will explore the musical drama of the St. John Passion and elucidate the lasting affective power of this music to transform its listeners in body, soul and spirit. As the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, Collegium Musicum, tenor Nicholas Mulroy, violinist Magaret Faultless, and members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment experience scheme prepare to bring this enduring masterpiece to life, Professor Varwig’s introduction will invite you listen with fresh ears to this iconic work of the Western classical tradition.
