Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time is a profound reflection born from the composer’s longing for peace during the tumultuous times of the Second World War. Imprisoned for his pacifist beliefs, Tippett’s oratorio begins with a stark declaration – ‘The world turns on its dark side. It is winter.’

Drawing from a diverse array of influences, from JS Bach’s Passions to Handel’s Messiah, A Child of Our Time is built around African American spirituals. This masterpiece oratorio stands as a testament to resilience and hope.

A devoted Catholic, Lili Boulanger composed several Psalm settings. Psalm 24 ‘La terre appartient à l’Éternel’ (‘The earth is the Lord’s’) channels her spirituality and unwavering dedication in this stirring piece.

Guided by the esteemed conductor Martyn Brabbins (renowned for his work with English National Opera, La Scala, Royal Concertgebouw, and BBC Symphony), the Cambridge University Orchestra, the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, and members of the choirs of Clare, Gonville & Caius, Jesus, Selwyn, and Sidney Sussex colleges unite. They are joined by stellar soloists Nadine Benjamin MBE, Amy Hoyland, Elgan Llŷr Thomas, and Ross Ramgobin.

Don’t miss this epic musical journey that traverses faith, history and the enduring power of the human spirit.
