APPS Showcase rocks the Six Six bar

Cambridge’s Six Six Bar – one of the city’s best-loved live music venues – played host to a spectacular showcase of popular music talent from the University of Cambridge on Sunday 28 April.

Cambridge’s Six Six Bar – one of the city’s best-loved live music venues – played host to a spectacular showcase of popular music talent from the University of Cambridge on Sunday 28 April.  The evening celebrated the achievements of the first cohort of participants on the University’s newly established Advanced Popular Performance Scheme, which fosters excellence in popular music by supporting outstanding student bands and vocalists with a programme of coaching and mentoring from industry professionals including tutors from the BRIT School and ICMP.

After an opening set from members of the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra, singer-songwriter and Queens’ College PhD student Dr Jordan Moxey performed a selection of her own songs exploring themes of love and loss, and spoke candidly about the role which music plays in building her personal resilience.  Girton College music undergraduate Garbhán McEnoy – who is also a member of St John’s College Choir – followed, performing a set which alternated covers with songs which he had written himself.  Garbhán regularly records songs for the social media platform TikTok, but this was his first live performance as a singer-songwriter.  Hard Rock-Blues band András Droppa followed with a high octane set, and the evening finished with a performance by one of the University’s most popular function bands, Hot Content.

About the performers

HOT CONTENT

We are one of Cambridge’s most popular function bands, with 10 of Cambridge’s top musicians making up a full rhythm section, 4 horns, and 2 singers. We have a large repertoire mainly consisting of modern club bangers and 2010s pop hits, as well as some classic old school numbers. Everything we perform has been arranged by members of the band, putting a funky twist on crowd favourites that you might not normally hear performed by a live band. Our repertoire includes a large variety of artists such as Dua Lipa, Rizzle Kicks, Sigala, Dizzee Rascal, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Bill Withers.

JORDAN MAUREEN

Jordan Maureen is a British-American singer-songwriter, based in Cambridge UK and Orlando FL. Expressive yet playful, her melodic style reflects a longstanding love of R&B, soul and pop music traditions. Writing for and self-accompanying with a piano, her lyrics speak to life, love and loss, and have been inspired by her experiences and those close to her. Jordan’s sound infuses smooth R&B vocals with the power of a contemporary pop belt.

GARBHÁN MCENOY

Garbhán is an Irish singer-songwriter who, heavily influenced by the writing styles of artists like Mitski, Lorde, Sufjan Stevens, and Phoebe Bridgers, aims to explore the contemporary queer coming-of-age experience through his music.

ANDRÁS DROPPA

András Droppa is a 22 year old Hard Rock-Blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter raised in North Devon and based in Cambridge. His unique blend of Rock, Blues, and Soul shines through in his original material, and his live band are undeniably energetic and infectious
